Website Building Update – Week 48

Sometimes I feel creeping dread at the thought of leaving my profession and a nice cushy desk job.  Sometimes my mind is flooded with all these “what if” thoughts about how I’m committing career suicide.  Sometimes I feel like a complete loser because I only make a little over $1000 / month.

But weeks like this week give me a little hope!

OMG!  I actually got some commissions from the AffiloJetpack launch!  I put together my bonus package just for fun and during the whole pre-launch I only got 5 opt-ins.  I seriously freaked out on Tuesday morning when I checked ClickBank.  Honestly I didn’t really expect to make any money at all from it.  This is so cool!

To the people out there that got AffiloJetpack through my link, I sincerely thank you and I hope that AffiloJetpack brings you everything that you hope for.  I’m in touch with one of you working on your bonuses, but the other one has not contacted me yet.  So please shoot me an e-mail if you got AffiloJetpack through my link so I can help you out.

Anyway, this week I did more of the usual stuff.  Monetizing extra pages, proofing articles, submitting articles.  It just never ends…  I’m starting to feel like a broken record here!

Someone that I really respect a lot found my blog and sent me a message encouraging me to keep going with this stuff.  That really helped boost my spirits too.  I guess it just goes to show you that if you do something long enough, you’ll start to draw some attention.

I am also starting to get distracted by other projects I’m planning for the future.  I just get too excited about them and I lose focus on all the boring online chores I need to do.  But I need to concentrate on all this stuff… at least for the next month or so.

PS: Hey!  AffiloJetpack is live!  If you’re sitting on the fence, uncertain about whether you should buy it, I just wanted to tell you that this is probably as close as you can get to a push-button simple program you can use to build an online business.  You get one year’s worth of high-quality newsletters, well-written content articles for your website, and some small e-books to give away as bonuses.

Plus, I’m offering some really cool bonuses myself.  Mark Ling is only offering AffiloJetpack until Sunday August 1st.  So you have this weekend to think things over, and if you decide to get AffiloJetpack please consider buying it through my affiliate link.

Wow – good going! It’s hard for me to imagine earning over $500 in one day, but it’s very good to see that it is indeed possible for “ordinary” IM’ers! I’m guessing you might break the 2K mark now for this month? Congratulations again!

    • Clayton says:

@Michelle, Thanks. Tuesday was a really weird day. I’ve never made that much money in one day before in my whole life. Kind of a strange feeling, but I could definitely get used to it :)

  2. Jennifer says:

Hello Clayton, Congrats on the earnings.. Don’t feel like a loser, at least you are making over $1,000 per month.. I haven’t even gotten to the $100 mark yet..LOL.. But you give me hope.. Thanks for the read..

    • Clayton says:

@Jennifer, Thanks for the encouragement. Sometimes I lose track of how far I’ve come and I only focus on how far I still have to go to get back up to my old salary of $40k. I’m glad my blog has helped you. Keep up your hard work!

    Hey man,

You don’t have to stay awake all night worrying about not ever working at a cushy desk job. And, if you keep thinking you are a loser, you will be one. Amazingly, real losers who think they are winners seem to do alright. Change your mindset.

I have a masters degree and have been working at my profession for over 15 years. Guess what? I’m a rat in a cage that can be replaced tomorrow. I’ve seen people a lot smarter and more personable than me get shit canned like taking out the trash.

Working for yourself means you never get downsized and you never have to put up with assholes if you don’t want to, especially if the asshole is your boss. It really gets bad if your asshole boss has a boss that’s also an asshole.

Besides, you cannot become wealthy as a worker bee (professional ________) unless you really pinch pennies and eat crackers for dinner.

Your masters degree proves you can learn at a high level. So put all your bullshit regrets aside and ramp up your mental horsepower.

Besides, the economy is not gonna recover for a very long time, if ever in terms of jobs. Your chances of landing a sweet gig being an architect diminish on a daily basis. Point of fact: Trump tower in Chicago is underwater, like so many other recent major mixed use developments. Don’t go apoplectic though.

It will take some soul searching and acceptance because I know you worked your ass off in grad school; and, you are a professional architect–that worked for the census bureau and God knows what other menial jobs. Change gears and move on. If I had the freedom to do this stuff full-time, I’d quit my professional social science career like a bad habit.

The only reason you should lose sleep is if you’re working your ass off on affiliate marketing.

@Clayton $550 in one day is awesome. IM is a journey like no other. One thing I would recomend is learning the beauty of lists and how to reap big from product launch every month or week. AffiloJetPack should be an eye opener – there is alot of potential.
A few weeks a go I got over $150 for a product launch and that was from a small list of 15 people only ! so its possible to make big money from lists.
Imagine being involved in a product launch every week for various niches?
Ever wondered how “gurus” earn thousands in one day? its stuff like this!

All the best in your endevours

    Hey Clayton,

Congrats. Man, keep going and stick to it. A little bit of distraction is good but to much distraction is bad. As you know it, you have to focus and do the work otherwise no google ranks and without google ranks no commissions. :-)

    All the Best!

    Cheers,
    Antonio

  6. LT says:

Hey you have a nice blog here, I’m going through the initial stages trying to reach the number 1 spot of google! haha and 1000k a month is not a bad thing, that’s acutally my goal and I can’t wait to do it :(

Affilorama rocks! and someday I’m gonna try that affilojetpack if they re open again.

  7. Jared says:

Whoa, congrats on the massive commissions this week! I’ve been following your blog for the past month or so and you give me inspiration to continue on this path. Hope all continues to go well.

  8. Ian Wilcox says:

Wow! congrats with the product launch madness!! some crazy money well earned there!

    • Clayton says:

@Carl, Thanks for the reality check. One thing I love about keeping this blog is having people like you around to keep me on track whenever I feel like having a pity party or feeling sorry for myself. I may not be rich, but at least I’m free to make my own destiny!

@Dennis, Yeah, I’m starting to see the power of product launches! I’m definitely looking at scaling up my e-mail marketing. Plus, I think product launches are kind of fun too. Mark was giving out some rather cool pre-launch prizes. I didn’t get any of them, but wow! Some of these were really awesome! (If only I got 45 more opt-ins I could have won the USB powered beer cooler…)

@Antonio, Yeah, you’re right. Gotta stay focused and get the things I need to do now done so that I can have all the fun down the road!

@LT, I’m 99% sure that Mark will offer AffiloJetpack again in a few months. The price tag is a little steep, but I think the value of having a year’s worth of e-mail content is absolutely worth it.

@Jared, Thanks. I’m glad this blog has helped you out. I made because I had a lot of questions when I first got started as a newbie like “how long will it take to make $x?” and I wanted to offer some answers to others that had those same questions too.

@Ian, Yeah, this product launch stuff is pretty crazy! Can you image how much money the guys out there that actually have an e-mail list or massive following made? Kind of blows your mind…

  9. Stefan says:

If you’re a complete loser for making only $1000 a month, then that will make me a complete-total loser haha

Anyway, the July 27th sales seems awesome. It’s good to see things work out for you, man

  10. Kheng says:

    Hi Clayton,

It’s Kheng here. Your supporter of AffiloJetPack. I like your bonus because I am lazy to do keyword research and article rewrites and I don’t want another ebook from other promoters. I guess I will outsource most of my IM work to others because i am not good at writing. Hey, earning $1000 + per month from affiliate marketing is cool. Imagine if you quit the affiliate marketing job, next month the clickbank paycheck will come to you as usual. For me, if I say bye bye to my boss, next month I got $0 paycheck.

  11. Tony says:

You broke the $2,000 barrier! To me, that would be huge since that’s about what I need to get by.

Your blog is one of my favorites cause it’s sweet watching an underdog bust ass and make something of himself. The story and proof is clearly laid out rather than having to skeptically read from those who have already made it. This is way more convincing.

Congrats and keep it up man.

    Tony

    • Clayton says:

@Kheng, Thanks again for buying through my link! Outsourcing is totally cool! I’m still trying to find an easy way to outsource link building though. If I could just get that taken care of then, I can just sit back and let everything run on auto-pilot!

@Tony, Yeah, I got over $2000 in July. Unfortunately, about $450 of that was from AffiloJetpack, which is just a one-time thing and not sustainable. As much as I would like, I doubt Mark Ling will do a new product launch every month :) My goal for August is to make $2000 from my niche sites. If I can do that, then it should be smooth sailing from there.

  12. Clayton,

Great job on the sales this month. Very cool. Pretty soon you’re going to be an IM guru! :)

    • Clayton says:

@Justin, Thanks man! Hope you had a good trip to Tahoe. Not sure if I’m particularly cut out to be a “guru.” I imagine them to be overly nice and perfect people. I think I like sarcasm and liquor too much :)

  13. james says:

hey Clayton, you are doing great. $1000 is more than most ever make, so doing it consistently is a huge leap forward.

Congrats on the jetpack sales. Glad to see you got something for all your hard work here. who knows maybe next time you will be up on the leader board.

  14. Rodderz says:

    Hi Clayton,

Another great week/month. I have had a few days of panic on my internet marketing journey but when I check commissions I realize that things always steadily improve providing I am working hard and following the necessary steps.

While you may consider thinking about new business directions as an unwanted distraction at the moment, it is very important to keep an eye on the future as you may find some excellent new avenues to go down.

    Keep going mate

    • Clayton says:

@James, Thanks man! I never really understood the power of product launches until last week. And to think, if I could do this without a list, can you imagine how much those guys with 1000′s of subscribers made? I don’t really care that much about being on the leader board, but some of those pre-launch prizes looked pretty cool. I’d love a trip to New Zealand to visit Affilorama HQ.

I think I need to put an opt-in form on my blog…

@Rodderz, Yeah, I’ve got some really exciting ideas for future websites. Now that I think I know the basic rules, I can start to experiment with some other things. I think it’s just human nature though to daydream about other things while you’re knee-deep in boring chores.

      • Clayton says:

@James, Hey, I saw you were #25 on the leader board. Good job man! Proof that an average guy can hold his own against the heavy hitters with their 50,000 person e-mail lists.

  15. Corrado says:

    Hi Clayton!

    Good to see your improvings!

I’ve a question for you: when you choose keywords, do you choose only “normal” keywords eg: stop dog barking) or even keywords that sounds strange (eg: dog stop bark)?

Do your anchor text variations always contains the main keyword (eg: home solar panel, home solar panels, …) or do you target different keywords with same meanings? (eg: home solar panel, solar cells, …)

    • Clayton says:

@Corrado, Thanks! If possible I’ll try to go after “normal” keywords. Sometimes I will use a word that might sound a little strange like “stop barking dog” where the phrase doesn’t sound 100% right in English and I will just write the article like “Stop Barking Dog Tip #1 – Understanding Why He’s Barking….. Stop Barking Dog Tip #2 – Getting His Attention…. etc.” But “dog stop bark”? That one could be a little tough… Maybe something like “Training Your Dog – Stop Barking Tip #1….” might work.

I do try to have the main keyword in the anchor text when I vary it up, like “home solar panel”, “how to pick the right home solar panel”, “how to make home solar panels” etc. But I’m also lazy and will usually just put whatever synonym pops into my head first like “home solar panel” “home solar power” “solar panel for your home” I think in some ways this appears more natural to search engines.

      I hope this helps.

@Stefan, Well, it’s really only $1600, if you don’t count the AffiloJetpack commissions :) But it gets better every month!

  16. Stefan says:

It’s already $2000? That’s fast! I wish I can stay focused like you do.

Anyway, I’ve discarded my wordpress.com blog and replace it with my own domain so you won’t see your comments, but thanks for the encouragement.

  17. Jason says:

    Hi Clayton,

I tried contacting you via your contact form, but since I didn’t hear back I thought I’d try reaching you here.

I bought AffiloJetpack through your link. Let me know what you need from me.

    Thanks,
    Jason
