Adventures in Lifestyle Design from a Path Less Traveled
Hey guys. Sorry for the lack of posts this month. I’ve been totally snowed under trying to wrap up some obligations I had and getting ready to travel around Thailand.
Anyway, now that I’m not doing weekly updates anymore on what I’m doing for internet marketing, I feel like I don’t really know what to write about here to keep you guys interested.
I need your help.
I’m no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but if you guys want to ask me any questions about internet marketing, I would like to answer them in future posts. Yes, this might be sort of lame to have you all help me come up with topics to write about, but I want to make sure I cover things that you all are interested in.
So go ahead and ask away. Leave your question as a comment and I will try to take some time to answer them as future blog posts here or in my e-mail list (hint: maybe you should sign up…).
PS: I am leaving for Thailand on September 28th. Due to the fact that I will be in a completely unfamiliar country, confused, lost, unable to communicate, and possibly having a nervous breakdown, I may be a few days late in posting my monthly earnings for September. Please excuse the anticipated delay.
Wish you luck on your journey. And also i like the idea to ask you some questions to IM. So i will start with it, the others will follow, i think.
So Clayton i got three websites running, on different topics, all with around ten articles and some Backlinks. But even they are in the top 15 from google there are not so much visitors and without visitors no buyers.
Is it right theres only money in the first three positions, and i should add further content to reach this ?
Greets,
Sebastian
@Sebastian, Thanks for the question. I’ll try to write up a detailed post on SERPs, but here’s a quick answer in the meantime:
Basically, you really want to try to get onto the first page of Google. You might get some traffic if you’re on the second page if your keywords have a high search volume, but the real traffic is on the front page. The higher your SERPs the better. There’s a graph somewhere that shows that the amount of traffic you get grows exponentially based on how high you rank. I think you get like 40% of the search traffic if you’re in position 1.
But that doesn’t mean you won’t get traffic or money at all if you’re in position 8 for example.
It’s really just a numbers game and the more people that visit your site, the higher your chances are of making the sale.
I will post in more detail in the future :)
Hello Clayton!
I’m a new reader of your blog… stumbled upon it through
the AffiloBlueprint forums. I’ve just recently started
internet marketing (been on it for about 5 months now)
and your blog is a true inspiration! Your writing really
connected with me because you describe the same inner struggles
and battles I am going through right now.
So thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing all this with us!
Next, I wish you luck on your travel to Thailand!
What I’d like to know is more management wise really… I have
a few sites running and I make 200-300 USD a month from them,
but I’m hitting a glass ceiling. I think the thing that’s holding
me back is that I’m not very organized. I don’t really keep
track of my numbers as I should.
So my question is, how do you organize and keep track of all
the information about your projects? Do you have a spreadsheet
with all the keywords you are targeting and the URLs you want to
rank for that keyword? How do you decide where to put your
energy and time?
I think my approach right now is too much haphazard and I feel like
I’m wasting a lot of my time and energy…
Thanks again for all your effort!
Ollie
Thanks Clayton for your fast answer, i’ll wait for your more detailed article!

Hey Clayton
I’ve been paying attention to your blog, as well as pitdenis, justin, etc.
I’m in IM for a year and a half but never implemented long term profitable sites. I’m just earning some money with adsense…like 120$ a month. Now, I’m motivated to work harder and earn a lot more! I’m also going to create a blog to show my results and share some info.
So…my questions…! You are using affiloblueprint as your business model. But how do you get backlinks? are you using SEnuke? Which tools do you use? thanks
Nuno Blanc
@Oliver, Thank you for your comment. I’m really glad that you’ve found some value from my blog.
I’m sort of old school in that I don’t really keep track of things online. I have a series of physical folders that I keep in my backpack with my laptop. Each folder is for a different website. I keep all the papers with different ideas for each website in each folder.
Mostly it just has keyword research and backlinks. For keyword research, I just have a rough working list of keywords that I want to target. For backlinks I just make a grid with the articles going across the top and the directories I submit them to going down the side. When I submit an article to a directory, I just put an “X” in the appropriate box and move on
That’s really all the organization I do. Generally, I’m not a very organized person :)
@Nuno, Wow! I only make like $2 a month from Adsense. Good job!
I get backlinks by 1.) manually submitting articles to article directories and 2.) submitting spun articles to the AMA and UAW blog networks.
Recently I hired a guy from Offshore Ally to build links to one of my sites. It’s too early to tell how effective it is, but he’s doing directory submissions, social bookmarking, forum commenting, blog commenting, and profile building.
Thanks for the questions guys, I think I could be able to address these two questions more in a future post on backlinking. I’ll make up some kind of downloadable PDF or something that I use to keep track of my backlinks.
Hey Clayton, you definitely helped me out with Market Samurai a few months back. Maybe you could do some kind of tutorial (video?) on that.
Other than that, I would be real curious to see what your experience has been on actual traffic vs. traffic you expect from search tools like Google, Market Samurai. If Google is saying “25 searches a day” for a term, what kind of traffic are you seeing for that?
Have a great trip man!
@Devin, That’s a good idea. I can’t give you any numbers off the top of my head, but I could do a case study one of these days (probably when I get back).
Hi Clayton,
I’m struggling with IM, I’m following all your steps, but it seems like I’m wasting my time, because my results doesn’t arrive.
Maybe (and I hope) it is only a matters of the small number of pages on my sistes, so I’m outsourcing rewriting before spinnig and I’ve changed AMA with blog comments.
I’d like to know, if possible wich are the pages, or the keywords that get the most traffic…or at least how many pages you have in Google page1 and how many visitors/day you are getting from them.
hey Clayton,
I think it’s always interesting to hear what people’s system is for building links. For example, typically if I’m going for a low competition keyword with a little bit of traffic I’ll get an article written and spun 3 times and then put it into AMA. That’ll be it.
But obviously if I have a high competition high traffic keyword, I’ll have to do some more link building and it’s always good to have a system for this. People might benefit from a post about your system.
cheers,
Keith
